At our next sketching session, I would like to separate the overall head outline from details such as eyes and lips. I keep noticing the jaw first, which makes it difficult to judge the overall outline without jumping to a label. I have been looking for a reference on square face shape to help frame the discussion. My aim is to write down the proportions I can actually see, then decide whether a category helps explain them. Could I begin with separate marks for the forehead, cheekbones and jaw, and compare those widths before drawing the contour? A few of the pictures have hair across the forehead, and I would rather leave those sections uncertain than guess. My plan is to give everyone the same outline worksheet and compare observations before starting the more detailed sketches. It would help if the exercise allowed mixed features, because a tidy label can distract us from what is actually visible. What would you ask beginners to observe first if the goal were a useful drawing reference rather than a definitive classification?
