So I’ve been driving a 2019 Mazda 6 that I bought used a few months ago, and I’m starting to notice the cranking feels a bit weak when the engine is hot, which is pretty much every afternoon in this weather. I popped the hood to check the battery and realized it’s a 55B24LS, but the weird thing is the previous owner had some random brand installed that I’ve never even heard of, and I’m wondering if that’s the root of my problems. I’ve been doing some research and it seems like there are different variants of this size depending on whether the car was originally built for the Japanese market or the GCC spec, and I’m confused about whether the terminal positions and cold cranking amps actually vary or if it’s all just marketing fluff. A friend told me that some of these smaller batteries don’t handle the extreme heat well because they have less plate material, so they tend to dry out faster and lose capacity within a year. I’m also a bit worried about the stop-start system because my car has that feature and I’ve heard that using a standard battery instead of an EFB or AGM can mess with the charging logic and shorten the lifespan considerably. I was thinking of just going to a big auto store and picking whatever fits, but then I read about people having issues with the battery management system not recognizing the new unit properly.
