Hi everyone. I am a partner at a small law firm and we are on our third marketing agency in four years. Each one starts with an audit, sends monthly reports full of charts nobody reads, and after a year we cannot point to a single case that came from any of it. I am close to giving up on the whole channel. For those of you who have made this work, what should I actually be asking an agency before signing, and what does a real report look like as opposed to the ones I have been getting? We are a five attorney practice, not a big firm with a marketing department.

The reports you are describing are activity reports, which is what agencies send when they cannot show outcomes. A real one starts with leads and cases, then explains which pages and queries produced them. If nobody can connect their work to a phone call, that is the whole problem in one sentence. Before signing, ask who does the work, whether the strategy is written down anywhere, and what happens in month one versus month six. We went with SeoLeo https://seoleo.agency/ after the same run of disappointments and the difference was that the plan existed on paper before anything got built. Insist on call tracking from day one. Ask for references from clients in a similar practice area too.
