Good evening. I work in finance, long hours, and my therapist keeps saying I need an activity that forces me to slow down and be present, something with my hands that has nothing to do with work. I tried meditation apps and gave up within a week. A coworker said pottery helped her a lot with stress. I like the idea, but I do not want a kids’ craft class or a party atmosphere. I would prefer something I can do on weekday evenings after work. Is there a pottery workshop for adults around here that is calm and works for complete beginners?

Your therapist is onto something, pottery is one of the few things where you literally cannot multitask. I started going to Pottery Studio 1 for the same reason, and their pottery workshop in Santa Monica for adults is supposed to launch soon, so you would not have to drive far. Classes are two hours, adults only in the regular slots, and the morning and late evening ones tend to be quieter, which is what you want. The instructor is calm and patient, nobody rushes you. Pricing is simple, $90 for a class or $130 if you add painting, no membership or long-term commitment, so you can come back whenever you feel like it. The first time I spent ten minutes just centering clay and forgot about my inbox completely. Would you go solo or bring a friend?
